What is happening?
Surface Cycling is proud to present Ontario Cycling Association Cyclocross Series Race No. 5 - Christie Cross
With multiple races to watch and cheer throughout the day along with a chance to Try-a-Race for adults and kids, Christie Cross is a great event for the whole family and an incredibly fun way to spend a brisk fall day.
Cyclocross is a shoulder season sport of bike racing that involves multiple laps on a mixed-terrain and moderately technical course that weaves around, over, and through various obstacles forcing riders to use balance and technique and giving spectators a great up-close view of the action. Most popular in central Europe, cyclocross attracts riders from Road and Mountain Bike racing originally as a form of off-season training, and has evolved into one of the most popular forms of racing for its entertainment quality for spectators and racers. The North American cyclocross scene continues to grow and recent generations of world-class racers from Ontario will be lining up and inspiring new generations of cyclists.
On top of the exciting racing will be lots of fun activities for kids and newcomers to get involved and try out the sport. Bateman's Bicycle Co. will be presenting a free kids race for all ages (balance bikes welcome!) and a single lap try-a-race for adults being supported by Cycle Toronto. These races are open to anyone who has a bike and a helmet. Costumes will be highly encouraged and prizes will be going to the best outfits throughout the day for racers and spectators.
The Course
Christie Cross 2024 is a 3km course that starts with a climb up the main paved path in the park and zig zags through grass and woods sections utilizing the Parks trademark pit for small climbs and descents to challenge riders. The course includes a pair of man made wooden barrier/planks in addition to natural barriers and edges that will oblige riders to dismount their bikes, run-up a steep hill, and ride through soft sand or wood chips. There is a double sided pit located near the DIY Skatepark that allows entrance at 2 points on the lap. The start finish will be located on top of the Hill on the Southern section of the Course, close to Bloor street.
Overall, the course contains a variety of terrains including grass covered slopes, a section of paved path that is 3 meters wide, as well as dirt sections. The course winds through a section of old growth evergreens and uses numerous natural features as technical challenges.
The course is designed to allow access to all park amenities along with intuitive access and flow through for park users. Registration and team tents will be located near the Gazebo and playground, with multiple areas for spectators to traverse the course that will be marshalled and controlled.
The Start section is separate from the race course and is only used for the start of each race. The start is located by the finish line.
The course is shortened for kids to eliminate some of the most technical features. Please see the course map for more details!
